Framed Initial

So we all know I love me some framed initials! Example

...well I guess for that matter I also love white spray paint hehehe...

...but come ON! How could you not!? It makes everything look so clean and uniform and modern...ahhhh sweet sweet peaceful white spraypaint... (yes I have problems)

So I wanted to do a small framed initial for our last name... and since we are the C*coughcoughcough* Family ;) I did a "C".

I am so in LURV! All I did was spraypaint an old frame I found at Goodwill (of course), spraypaint a wooden letter "C" I got from Michaels, stick some scrapbok paper in the frame and glue the letter in the center! Super easy and SUPER adorbs! :)

I hung him up right by my front door... I'm thinking I need a small white board with keyring hooks right underneath it. What do you think?

Family Framed Thumbprints

Dining room lighting

So in our new house over our dining room table we have this light/fan contraption that I'm pretty sure is haning by a thread...when the fan is on the whole thing's a-movin'! I will have to post a picture of it later (or a video for that matter hehe) but the hubbs and I are trying to pick out some new lighting... I'm kinda digging this beauty from Ikea!

It's totally neutral, will match our couches in the next area spot on and will go well with our grey/white/yellow and wood colors going on in our casa! Posting it here to remember! I think I'm liking it! Going to search a little bit more just to be sure!

Striped Accent Wall

I have been wanting to do something to the small wall under my stairs in my front room for quite a while and finally got off my booty last week and did it! I had originally thought about doing a repeat stencil and then decided on clean light gray on medium gray stripes!

My little wall before... (don't judge that tiny cluttered table thing lol, I am still unpacking boxes and that's where it stays right now)

Then I started taping off my lines...be sure to do this right the first time, and take the time to measure exactly or else you will be screwed...I speak from experience ;)

Here's the tips to getting suuuper clean non bleeding stripes...(which I thought I was too good for and have to do a few touch ups still oops!)

1. Paint wall the color you want...all one color (mine was already painted Behr's Gray Timber Wolf)
2. let dry completely
3. Measure and tape off your lines
**4. Here's the secret: Paint over the edges of your tape the same color that is already on the walls (ex: I would use Gray Timber Wolf) you do this to seal the tape to the wall and so the color that bleeds under the tape (because it will if you have textured walls) is the same color that is already on the walls!
5. let that dry a bit and then paint over it the color you want your stripes and remember to always pull your tape before it completely dries so you don't risk pulling off dried paint in chunks.

And Voilà!

Simple Bathroom Mirror Upgrade

Our downstairs powder room is tiny. It had ond of those mirrors that just slapped up against the wall with a couple screws around the outsides holding it on. It wasn't very cute...it wasn't necessarily "ugly" but it just was doing nothing for me. So we painted the room a dark chocolate brown and hung up the mirror that used to be in our old apartment in our dining room and I think it looks so pretty now!

Kitchen Lights Before & After

Hubby and I bought our first house back in December for our new little bambino! Well I'm finally getting around to posting some of the projects we've already had done here (and there will be loads more to come!)

We wanted to re-do the kitchen lights since they were those uuuugly and I mean UGLY fluorescent lights! This is the only picture I have of the before...this was when we were still in escrow...look up lol

we pulled them out of there and noticed we had a beautiful recessed ceiling under them! We had our contractor cut some holes and rewire some recessed lighting in there and had him paint the inner wall the same gray color we were painting our entire downstairs! We also added some decorative moulding around the outside edge and around the inside edge and woooah mama, talk about an upgrade!

It makes everything look better! I got this giant frame from Ikea a couple years ago. It was black and had stuff inside it. Well I took it apart, spray painted it in my favorite shade of white and hung just the frame in my son's nursery with his first initial in it. Simple and awesome!

LPDH's Ornament Party!

Hi Bloggies!! I've been away for a while and alot has happened! The Mr and I are having our first baby due in February and we bought our very first house whcich means tons of new projects for this new mama!!

Since we just moved in (literally last week) I was feeling a little scrooge-ish because I had NO Christmas decorations up. (you know how sad that is being a crafty girl) Well, I forced the hubbs to get out all of our decor and tree from the garage so that I could have at least a little time feeling like it was an actual holiday.

We finally got our tree up yesterday....yes YESTERDAY...5 days before Christmas! Yikes! I love going through our ornaments since I'm a big ornament collector (so much so that I can't even fit most of them on our tree *blush*) and I thought it would be a fan-tabulous idea to throw an ornament party on Little Pink Dollhouse! I'll post a Linky at the end of this post, and I want to see ALL of your favorite ornaments!

And now, on with my faves (and I want to hear lots of "oohing and ahhing"!) ;)

Origami Paper Flowers

Spring is almost here! Keeping up with my spring inspired projects, let's make some paper flowers!

You'll need 2 different colored paper, I chose pink for my flower, and green for my stem.

You can get specific origami paper which is usually in perfect squares, but if you have normal rectangular paper like I do, just turn it into a perfect square like this:

And you end up with this:

Take your square and make creases from corner to corner (diagonally)

holding the creases, push in two of the sides to create a triangle

lay your triangle with the point of the triangle that won't openaway from you.

On one side take the 2 bottom points and fold up to the top point

turn over and do the same on the other side

now you'll have a diamond. take each left and right point on each side, and pinch together, making the same shaped diamond. This tucks away the flaps.

Now take each side on one side of your diamond and fold towards the center, overlapping the center just a bit, and tuck one side into the open end of the other side, then repeat on the other side of your diamond

Now you'll have 2 little "handles" on each side. Hold on to then with your thumb and pointer finger, (pinching where you tucked the sides together and making sure you hold tight enough they don't pop open) pull apart a bit and push the bottom down on the table, "puffing" it up

Now at the top of your flower, there should be 4 "petals" peel them back.

On the bottom of your flower you'll have a hole

Now take your paper for your stem, cut a piece length wise (about 2 inches wide) and keep folding lengthwise until you physically cannot fold anymore

Insert the stem into the hole on the bottom of the flower and you're done!

Turning Roses into Peonies...I'm magic

Hi friends!

Here's a tutorial on how to turn silk roses into peonies, that you can do on any surface...I chose to do one on one of my old blue throw pillows. Peonies have got to be my most favorite flower in the world. They are so beautiful and delicate. There's something frilly and uber girly about them, which is probably why I love them!

What I used:

Blue throw pillow
4 White fake roses
Scissors
Glue gun

Take your flowers

And pull off the backing and each layer...

Discard any plastic pieces and arrange petals in piles by size...

Starting with your smallest size , pinch together the tops of the petals, and the center will make a point

Put some hot glue on the tip of that pont, and place on the surface you are gluing your peony...for me, it's the center of my pillow. This petal will be the center of your flower.

Do the same for the rest of your smallest sized petals and cluster them around the center petals.

Once you have used all of the smallest sized, move on to the next size up and continue to cluster outside the smaller petals

Do the same for all the sizes, except for your largest peatals

Now for your largest petals, cut them into individual petals

Glue the tip, or the point of the petal, and glue them all around the outside of your cluster , but lay these flat.

Ta-da! A peony from roses!

Pillow Revamp & Fabric Rosette Tutorial

Hi Hi Hi Hi Hi!!

Sorry I have been absent for so long!

I plan on being back in action with alot of new projects for Spring!

Since spring is right around the corner, I've been wanting to bring a little bit of it inside our apartment and cheer the place up!

I've had these old throw pillows on our couches for sometime now and I've been pretty bored of them lately, so I decided to jazz them up a bit!

Here's what I used:

my old throw pillow

scissors

hot glue gun

fabric

and a puppy potty pad (which I use as a padded work space to protect my table).........don't judge.

Now, on to making the rosettes...

Lay your fabric out flat

About 2 inces from the edge of your fabric cut a little slit

Now grab hold of both sides of your cut

And rip it!!

Don't worry about trying to keep things straight, just pull equally hard on both sides and it will always rip in a straight line! (This also feels really good to do if you're P-Oed about something!)

Here's what you end up with

Now the lenth of your fabric strip will determine how big around your rosette ends up...the length of mine wasn't long enough for me so I just hot glued 2 strips together.

Once that cooled and dried I tied a knot where the 2 strips were glued, and that acts as the center of your rosette. (If you don't need to glue 2 strips together, then knot your fabric in the dead center of your strip)

Pinch the 2 sides of the knot together and glue them together so you end up with the knot on top and the 2 fabric "tails" side by side.

Start twisting your tails together and wrap them around the knot, gluing to secure as you go

Keep winding and gluing until all of your tail is secured to the rosette.

Here is what you end up with

Soooo cuuuuute!!

About this time in the project feel your pant leg being pulled from below the table and.......err......wait a minute! This isn't part of my tutorial....oh Harley!

And take your dog out to use the bathroom...this step is of course optional.

GETTING BACK TO IT!

I ended up making the bigger one with 2 strips glued together, and I made 2 smaller rosettes with only one strip of fabric.

Then I just glued them where I wanted them on my throw pillow and voila!

Beautiful! I loved it so much, I made one for my barstool!

End Table Redo

I found this little guy at my new favorite thrift store...

I'm not liking the color, but I'm loooooving the lines

So I sanded him down

Sprayed him with a coat of white spraypaint, just for a base

And then painted him with interior paint in white. (Not pictured)

Then I took these stencils and using a silver/grey (grey,gray?) paint, I made him pretty

I bought a new bauble knob from Lowes and stuck that on there.

And now I cannot get enough of my table!!! I love love love it!! SQUEEE!

Fabric on Canvas

Just a quick and easy idea for old scraps laying around... I took an old canvas I had painted on back in college, some fabric I wasn't going to use for anything and my staple gun and just "reapholstered" if you will, the canvas.

Easy! Make sure you pull and staple really tight so you don't have any wrinkles in the fabric. How cute would these look in some sort of toile print!?!?

Fall/Halloween Decor

Just wanted to share my fall/halloween decor in my dining room, I know it's early for Halloween, so I tried to keep it more along the "fall" lines...but YOU KNOW it's soooo hard for a crafty girl to not be able to decorate according to the next holiday especially one as fun as Halloween!! I would also like to add that I got everything for the cheap, either at thrift stores or the Dollar Tree. The most expensive thing was the tablecloth that I bought for $5 at my favorite thrift store.

Easy Halloween Decorations

I was browsing the Dollar Tree today and found these frames...

The white one ended up breaking, but oh well...the rest of them I spray painted black and then framed cute scrapbook paper...

Voila! I'm sooo into the shiny black frames and bright cheery paper! I love love love them!

Turn an Old Book Into Something Pretty!

Okay really, I think this has been the easiest thing I've ever done, and I feel like I have a fuzzy memory of making these when I was a little girl.

I bought this book at the Goodwill for $1 specifically for this project. I have never read Anne Rice, so I don't know if this book is any good, but if anyone out there is reading my blog, and this is your favorite book ever...look away, it's gonna be a bloodbath..... Okay not really, but I will be destroying this book.

I bought this book because:

A) it wasn't hardcover

B) the pages were huge

C) It had alot of pages, I think it was over 550 pages.

All I did was I started with the first page, and folded it in half.

and then turned the page

Keep going

Keep going

Until all of your pages are folded

Now open up the book in random spots to kind of loosen the spine from the cover

Carefully remove the cover of the book without ripping the spine (you'll know if you ripped the spine if the pages all fall out one by one.) Use scissors if you need help.

Once the cover is off, the folded pages should push against eachother to spin out like this

If it doesn't, you may need to re open more pages to kind of loosen the spine a little bit more, and if that still doesn't work, use some craft glue to hold the spine together.

I stuck it on a pedestal (that I may or may not be painting a different color) that I bought from Goodwill for $3. It really serves no purpose. I just thought it looked cool on my bookshelf.

More Thrifty Finds

Everyone needs to run...not walk...to their local Target! I found these in the dollar spot there for $2.50 each!

Then get in your car and FLOOR IT to big lots. All of their Jennifer Ferrell stuff (which is pretty nice designer stuff) is all on sale for 70% off!! They had like furniture there that was normally $200 and is now $60! Crazy! I didn't get anything huge, but I did walk away whith this uber cute bowl and filler/smell good stuff!

I got each of these for $6

I just threw one of the packages in the decorative bowl

Turning a $7 Giant Frame Into a Beautiful Chalkboard

I found this framed "Artwork" if you want to call it that at Good will for $7 and I saw it's potential. Something about the frame called to me saying "Amy, please take me home and give me a better life."

YIKES! This needed my help badly!

I cleaned it up a little first with a dry rag, took it apart, and then sprayed 2 coats of white paint on the frame.

When I had opened it up, there was a very stiff cardboard backing that I gave 2 coats of black chalkboard paint.

I was going to leave the frame pure white, but then decided to age it a bit. I first took an ordinary kitchen sponge with the soft sponge on one side and scrubby side on the other and some gold paint.

I put some paint on the soft side of my sponge and smooshed it together so it soaked into the sponge a little bit.

Using my sponge I wiped paint onto my frame, and then wiped it right back off again with a clean part of my sponge, that way not too much gold paint stayed on the frame.

Then I took the scrubby side of my sponge and lightly roughed the frame up a bit.

When everything dried I just put her back together again and hung her up in her new home in my kitchen, and I think she looks mighty fine if I do say so myself!

Thrift Store Before & Afters

I am obsessed with going to thrift stores and Goodwill, buying ugly things and making them pretty so I just wanted to post of a few before and afters.

I bought this little diddy for about $2

Soooo much better! I love how shiny the black is!

Not a huge change for these next 2, but I bought them both for $2.50 total

Mod Podge is Love

I'm starting to make my own gift boxes and just wanted to share my latest one.

Starting with a plain cardboard box from Michaels...

...Mod Podge, foam brushes and an exacto knife (not pictured)

I first used my exacto knife and went thru the Sunday LA Times and cut out the comic strips individually in their single cells...

I then applied my mod podge to the lid of the box and started applying the comic cells one by one and putting a coat of mod podge over each one. Once finished I let it dry for about 30 minutes and then applied another layer of mod podge for extra gloss. I also Spray painted the bottom of the box black and ended up with the CUTEST gift/decorative box

EVERYONE I know will be getting their birthday/Christmas presents inside these for the next year at least!

He kinda reminds me of "The Raven"...so I named him Poe...

And now he lives in my kitchen. (I know I'm crazy) He's just too too cute!

I also whipped out the watercolors and made this little diddy up, and stuck it in a $5 on sale frame from Target! It will be hung in my living room...

Etsy Throw Pillow Covers

I got my new pillow covers from Etsy for some of my throw pillows for our couches. We will very soon be buying new couches, just haven't found ones we are totally blissfully in love with yet. Anyways, back to the awesomeness that are now my throw pillows...

A Sailor's Life for Me!

I'm redecorating my bathroom and doing a sailing theme, and just wanted to blog about the process.

We live in an apartment that is a "historical landmark", so there's not too much stuff that I can change which is a drag. I don't really understand why it's a historical landmark, the only thing I know is that movie "The Purple People Eater" was filmed in my apartment. If you've ever seen the movie, the apartment that the grandpa lives in, well that's my exact apartment. Aside from that I don't know what's so historical about it, but I do see tour busses outside on the street every now and then...guess I'll have to take a tour of Downtown Fullerton one day. Our bathroom still has the original 1920's clawfoot bathtub and old things like that. It also has one of those sinks that are just attached to the wall with nothing underneath it and you can see old pipes and cracked paint and stuff... please don't gag when you see this pic...

Well with a little fabric, some fabric glue, super glue and velcro I fixed that...

Ahhh so much better, and now we can use that curtain to also act as a little storage! I just made the curtain with fabric glue to hold it all together as I don't have a sewing machine, took one side of velcro and glued it to the top of my curtain, and super glued the other side of the velcro up underneath my sink and stuck them together! Super easy!

The bathroom is still a work in progress, I need to find a shower curtain and window curtain or possibly make them, and get some of the decor together a little bit, but here's what I have going on so far...

I got these towels on sale from Target!

These are supposed to be name card holders like for dinner parites, but I just threw them in here to mix it up. I got them for like $1 at Tuesday Morning

I still need to paint this helm that I got at Michaels, and I got this lighthouse at Big Lots on clearance for $20 it's huge, and underneath there's a switch that makes seagull noises and the light on the top rotates and works...what?....ok ok if you know me at all, you know I'm a major cheeseball and LOVE things like that!

And that's what I have in my bathroom so far! I hope you can use it for some inspiration!

I love love love browsing thrift stores, buying ugly things for really really cheap, giving them a facelift at making them beautiful.

I was browsing at one of my favorite spots a couple weeks ago and came across a very sad looking short bookcase. It was falling apart and parts were lifting up. It looked like wood, but upon further inspection it's actually that fake wood, pressed cardboard stuff with a wood-like covering on it. Well, I saw it's potential, and scooped it up for $7 (I'm bummed I didn't take a before picture of it). I stopped by Walmart and bought a small can of Peacock Blue paint, got home, re-glued some pieces, sanded it down and gave it two coats of the pretty paint and turned a pitiful little bookcase into my new accent furniture.

I still have to put books and things in it and decorate it cute, but you get the idea!

Diaper Cake Tutorial

One of my cousins just had a baby girl, and her baby shower is tomorrow (she was born right before 35 weeks) so I decided to make her a diaper cake for her shower!

What you'll need

A pack of 56 diapers

Clear hair rubber bands (I bought black, but I recommend getting clear as they're less noticeable) & Regular large rubber bands

One 9oz baby bottle with lid (I bought 2 and used one for decoration) and filled them with candy

Ribbon

Silk Flowers

Scissors & Double sided tape

One 14" round cardboard cake circle

To start lay your diapers flat on the table and begin rolling them up from the waistband so any colors/design ends up in the center of the rolled diaper.

When it's rolled, take one of your hair rubber bands and place around the rolled diaper to secure.

Roll and secure all 56 of your diapers.

Next, take one of your candy filled baby bottles and place a regular rubber band around it.

Slip rolled diapers inside the rubber band all around the bottle creating a ring.

Once completed, place another rubber band around the ring of diapers and create a second ring of diapers.

And create a 3rd ring.

Your base should now look like this.

Next place another rubber band around the top of the bottle and start making your second layer of the cake, this time only making 2 rings of diapers.

Your finished second layer should look like this.

Now pull up on your bottle a little bit so it peaks out the top of the second layer of the cake, but not too much that it completely lifts all the way out of the first layer.

Place a rubber band around the bottle and create one final diaper ring which finishes the your top layer.

Now for the fun part, decorating!

Take your ribbon and measure and cut pieces to fit around each layer to hide all of the rubber bands.

Apply the ribbon to each layer using double sided tape to secure.

Next, take your silk flowers and cut them from the main stem, so each flower has it’s own shorter stem.

Group flowers together like a bouquet.

Place your “bouquet” into the top of your cake and arrange as necessary.

(I just realized you can see my husband’s UFC game on TV while he was playing xbox lol)

Place your cake on your cardboard cake circle. I also stuck double sided tape to the bottom of the other candy filled bottle and stuck it to the cake circle.
